Injury updates
The Washington Commanders enter their season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with several players dealing with injuries from the preseason/training camp. Johnny Newton is still limited due to foot issues. He had surgery on one foot for a Jones fracture after his college career ended, and then discovered he needed the same surgery on the other foot after he was drafted. He was dealing with a soft-tissue issue in one of his feet that limited him in training camp, and he remains limited in practice. Dan Quinn said he’s be reassessed on Friday, but we might need to wait a little longer for his NFL debut.
Three new Washington players missed most or all of the preseason due to injuries. DE Clelin Ferrell played for snaps in the first game, then sat with a knee injury. LB Dante Fowler Jr(knee) and rookie LT Brandon Coleman(shoulder) missed all three games. Dan Quinn said he’ll watch Coleman this week, and decide if the rookie is ready to start his first NFL game, or if veteran Cornelius Lucas will get the nod.
